Counterfeit Jersey Issues
Counterfeit jerseys have been an issue for all official NBA, NFL, MLB, etc. jersey sellers. They are not only losing money for those companies, but they are breaking the law as well. Counterfeit jerseys are popular because they cost significantly less than official jerseys so companies in China, for example, are taking advantage of the market for sports merchandise and fan's loyalty to a team/player.
Companies like “Jianyu Xu Jersey” have been selling counterfeit jerseys and getting away with them as well. They are getting away with it with by making the jerseys less quality, misspellings on the jersey, putting different logos in different spots, and more. The counterfeit jerseys are not as nice and some don’t look all that real but according to Steve Branchmann from IPWatchdog (the leading Intellectual Property Law Blog on the Internet) “Of course, there are plenty of consumers who don’t particularly care about the quality so long as the price is much lower than the comparatively exorbitant costs of an officially licensed jersey.” The official and legal jerseys cost "typically priced between $100 and $300 for an officially licensed version" when the counterfeit usually cost around only $20.
Although law enforcement tries, it is tough to stop all of the companies that make counterfeit products and sell them online, "Agents from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) seized $68,000 worth of unlicensed goods from a flea market booth operated by the racketeers in January 2015." That quote represents how they do try to take action to stop these things from happening, but it would be nearly impossible to stop all websites from selling these jerseys. It's not only obscure website and company names, but companies like Amazon who are trying to sell everything at the lowest price are selling these fake jerseys and merchandise. Most of it comes from China, and they have been pretty creative and proactive in keeping their websites as legal as possible to stay on the internet. There have been teams like the Chicago Cubs to take action "the Chicago Cubs have taken action in court to obtain an ex parte seizure order to seize counterfeit Cubs apparel being sold outside Wrigley Field" and they have had success with this. More people should try to take action by doing things similar to this.
Do more popular players jerseys cost more than other players? If so, how much?
