Genetically modified foods have been a large part of our diet since 1994 when they were introduced to the food industry. They were created to make foods and other goods cheaper for the consumers, but as a result, made consumers pay prices way more serious than any lump of money. Although they make foods delicious and make foods cheaper to make or produce, they are doing lots of harm to our bodies, and is making both adults and children’s diets unhealthy. Rachel Mount wrote about how Genetically modified foods can cause inflammation, liver and kidney failure, allergies, and hinder our ability to reproduce in her article titled “How Do Genetically Modified Foods Affect Your Health?
When we eat GM foods, we do not consider the long term effects it will have on our body. We just know that it tastes delicious and will satisfy our hunger for the moment. What we do not consider is the fact that it is making our bodies fluffier and not defining or toning our bodies. They are very unhealthy to eat, especially for people who care about their body and the image that it gives to other people. These genetic modifications are not like anything our bodies or digestive systems have seem, which means it takes longer to break down all the GM foods we take in. Due to a lack in digestion, the food sits in our bodies instead of being digested properly, and thus turning into fat instead of being burned off through exercise. These foods are also causing liver and kidney failure because these organs do not know how to break down the new modified DNA of the foods and drinks we are consuming. This means that perfectly healthy and normal people are having kidney and liver failures instead of the typical people who abuse their kidneys or livers through their own lifestyle. It was thought that kidney failures were a direct result of alcoholism, but nowadays liver failure could be a result of having too much bread in your diet. Further down the road, we may genetically evolve to be able to digest these foods, but for now our generation does not know how to digest these foods correctly and it is showing in our bodies whether it be our livers failure or our bodies getting fluffier instead of slimming down.
Even though those results are shocking, the scariest results of GM foods is the fact that allergies to these foods are popping up unexpectedly, and it can also hinder our ability to reproduce. Since GM foods have only been available since 1994, long term effects are essentially unknown, but lab tests on assorted animals tells us that our ability to reproduce will decrease as our exposure to GM foods increases. For people who are trying to have kids but have been eating GM foods all their lives, this could be life changing news. It would be devastating to hear that you are physically unable to have kids or start a family just because of your diet and what you are eating. On the other hand, if you eat GM foods you may be allergic to things you were never allergic to in the first place. Mount talks about in her article that, “inserting new genes into a seed's delicately constructed genome is always a gamble because scientists can't predict all the consequences. There is, for example, the possibility of creating brand-new allergens.” This means that by eating these types of foods, you may eat yourself into a peanut allergy even though you were not born with it. This would change your life forever, if you catch it early enough. You could develop the allergy and before you know it, you eat a peanut and do not have anything to stop you from going into anaphylactic shock. These GM are scarier than we all think and we should be careful about how many GM foods we incorporate into our diet.
